AC Residence

This beautiful penthouse apartment is located in the former Mater Misericordiae Maternity Hospital built between 1939-40. The building is designed in the Inter-War Art Deco style.

The new owners wished to update the existing 80’s interiors and create a contemporary and timeless apartment space. They were unsure how best to proceed.  Taking inspiration from the unique heritage of the building the brief was to create a functional, modern space with art deco influences and a Hollywood style glamour reminiscent of the period. Opulent materials such as marble and brass, bold black and white colour schemes, and geometric pattern and symmetry were combined to achieve a sophisticated yet relaxed interior.

New timber floors were laid in a rich walnut colour giving a strength to the base layer of the apartment. A plush, velvet cut pile carpet in a pale grey was selected for the bedrooms and pale grey wall colour throughout lends cohesion to each room. The kitchen layout was redesigned to include a central island with striking marble bench tops, beautiful, brushed brass fixtures and a stunning feature pendant light. A smoky mirrored splashback reflects the stunning views of the city skyline.

The adjacent dining and living spaces have a mix of luxurious materials such as leathers, linen, marble, horn and brass to create a sophisticated yet inviting mood. The custom designed joinery provides a focal point in the room, ample storage and a subtle dark background for the television. Layers of pattern and accent colours are added via the textural rug, scatter cushions and artworks.  The clients existing dining table and sideboard were refinished in a satin ebony and brass detailing, with custom dining chairs in velvet and art deco fabric.

The ensuite bathroom mixes timeless selections of black, white and brass, strong geometric repetition in the marble mosaic floor tiles, classic subway tiles and an art deco wall sconce.  The adjoining master bedroom features an opulent custom velvet bedhead with feature trim from Catherine Martin’s Metropolis range, glossy black furniture, and crystal bedside table lamps.  A custom armchair reflects the rich decorative nature of Art Deco and also its geometric modernism.

This apartment renovation exceeded the client’s expectations both in glamour and functionality providing a special nod to the history and timeless style of the building in which it is found.
